Hot action near Reipertswiller, which saw one of its battalions (3rd) and companies from each of the 1st and 2nd Battalions surrounded and overcome by a fresh SS Mountain Infantry Regiment. When the fight ended on 20 January,

158 GIs had been killed in action,
350 had been wounded or injured and evacuated and
426 (many of whom were wounded) were captured.

Depuis le 16 janvier la compagnie K est encerclée sur la face nord de la côte 420 (421 carte IGN). Elle sur le point de tenter un repli vers l'ouest, en descente. Pour celà demande à l'artillerie des fumigènes au point 805395
16h15 : Msg du Cmdt. Compagnie K - "On est prêt à y aller. Envoyez tout ce que vous avez"
16h20 : Msg du Cmdt. Compagnie K - "Envoyez tout" Et on le fait.
16h21 : La compagnie K appelle pour demander d'envoyer toute l'artillerie. Feu.
16h22 : Message de la compagnie K - "Nous nous rendons."
16h24 : Mortiers de 81mm et artillerie reçoivent l'ordre de tout enfumer.
16h26 : Radio Compagnie K - "Impossible de sortir"
16h33 : Pas de réponse des compagnies I, K, L.
En sachant qu'à ce moment les compagnies G et C ont été anéanties. Seulement 2 hommes ont pu rejoindre l'arrrière. Le 3e Bataillon a été anéanti sur place.

Journal du 1er bataillon

14 Jan 1945 with the initial American attempt to take the 420 hill mass. It seems the plan was to sweep to the top from the central ridge running southeast and northwest. Due to navigation errors the attack ended up moving through the ridges and draws of the south face.

15 Jan 1945. The Americans seize the top, but can they hold it?

16 Jan 1945. The Americans manage to reinforce their toehold but the Germans have placed blocks around the south side.

17 Jan 1945. The Americans attempt to reach their isolated companies but lack the strength from three days of fighting.

18 Jan 1945. Reinforced, the Americans continue the attempts to reach their isolated companies. The Germans launch a successful attack on the hilltop perimeter and drive G Company from their positions.
